You can whiten teeth on almost any subject in your photos and it will be an improvement (unless they just completed a 14-day regimen with whitening strips). I think the trick is to not go too far or it looks unnatural.

Photoshop Elements makes it easy to do and you can control exactly how much whitening to apply as you get feedback on your monitor..

Carl has good dental hygiene habits and as you can see from the shot below his teeth look pretty good..

Let’s go through this quick tutorial and you decide if it’s worth the time.

STEP 1
Open an image with Photoshop Elements that you want to try this tutorial on.

Carl’s teeth aren’t noticeably yellow in this shot

STEP 2
Use your favorite selection technique to make a selection of the teeth. I used the Polygonal Lasso tool for my selection.

STEP 3
In the Layers palette click on the Create adjustment layer icon and from the drop-down menu select Hue/Saturation
adjustment_layer
When the Hue/Saturation window appears choose Yellows from the drop-down menu in the Edit field. Make sure the Preview box near the bottom-right of the window is checked. Slide the Saturation slider to the left and the Lightness slider to the right while watching the results on your image. When you get to the point where the teeth look better without looking gray or too light switch the Edit drop-down menu to Master

Again slide the Saturation and Lightness sliders as before to see if you can tweak it a little more. When you are satisfied with the results click OK

As you can see in the before and after shot below the result is a subtle but effective improvement. Imagine how much this technique could improve major discoloration of teeth
