The Panasonic Lumix ZS10 is what I call a pocket superzoom camera – it fits in your pocket and it’s got a ton of zoom – a 16x 24-384mm image-stabilized Leica zoom lens, to be exact. That’s a crazy amount of lens reach – especially for a camera that fits in the pocket of your Levis. Because they’re so versatile and easy to carry, pocket superzooms like the ZS10 [...]

The new Olympus XZ-1 is one of the coolest new compact cameras to be introduced this year. It’s got a super-fast f/1.8 Zuiko zoom lens, RAW, manual exposure and the same accessory port as the Olympus Pen cameras. I got a pre-production XZ-1 from Olympus so I could have an article and video posted when it was announced (Olympus XZ-1 preview video). Now I have a production XZ-1 that I can [...]

This is our first user review for the latest version of Canon’s 70-200mm pro workhorse zoom lens. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM zoom was a significant update (Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II announcement) to what was already an excellent lens and killerbee gives it a lot of praise in his well-written, detailed review. No matter what brand of camera you use, I think a pro 70-200mm lens [...]

This page has high-resolution sample photos taken in the PhotographyREVIEW.com test studio with the Nikon D7000 digital SLR. Sample photos were shot RAW at all ISO settings at f/8 in aperture priority mode with the AF-S 18-105mm VR kit lens. White balance was set for the tungsten preset. The images were converted to 16-bit TIFF files at the default Adobe Lightroom settings and the logo, text [...]

The Canon PowerShot S95 is one of the top premium compact cameras on the market right now. It’s also the only truly pocket-sized pro-spec’d point-and-shoot. I saw the S95 review GrizzlyAdam posted on his blog and convinced him to also post a review in the PhotographyREVIEW.com user reviews. Anyone who’s in the market for a compact camera with serious performance and image quality [...]

I recently had the pleasure of using the AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G Nikkor zoom lens with the Nikon D3s digital SLR. The lens is a tank but the wonderful optics more than make up for the extra size and weight. When I saw Prettym1k3’s excellent user review for the Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G zoom lens, I knew it had to be elevated to a Featured User Review. It’s an enthusiastic, detailed review [...]

Olympus steps up to the premium compact camera plate with their new XZ-1 camera. The Olympus XZ-1 digital camera is designed to compete with high-end compact cameras like the Canon PowerShot G12, Nikon Coolpix P7000 and the Panasonic Lumix LX5. To do that it has a large, 1/1.63-inch 10-megapixel sensor, a 4x f/1.8 iZuiko zoom lens (28-112mm equivalent), full manual exposure controls, 720p HD [...]

Olympus has announced the E-PL2, the second generation of their entry-level E-PL Pen Micro Four Thirds camera. They sent me an E-PL2 a few days ago so I could get to know it and post a hands-on intro when it was announced. Compared to last year’s E-PL1, the Olympus E-PL2 is more of a refinement than a brand new camera. It uses the same 12-megapixel Live MOS sensor but bumps the sensitivity [...]

Nikon sent me their latest pocket superzoom camera, the 12-megapixel Coolpix S8100, a few weeks ago. Like other pocket superzooms it has a 10x zoom lens and it fits in a pants or shirt pocket. Besides the 30-300mm Nikkor ED VR zoom lens, the S8100 also has full HD video, a 5 frames-per-second full-resolution burst rate, great close-up shooting and a 240 frames-per-second slow motion video mode. [...]

The Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM wide-angle zoom lens was announced early this year and Sigma sent me one for review as soon as they had one available. It’s currently the widest non-fisheye lens on the market for APS-C digital SLRs like the Canon Digital Rebels, the EOS 7D, Nikon D7000, etc. I’ve been using it for a few months now and I absolutely love it. That’s right – no big build-up or [...]

The Canon PowerShot SD4500 IS is a pocket point-and-shoot digital camera with a 10x zoom lens and 1080p HD video. It has a 10-megapixel “HS System” CMOS sensor similar to that used in Canon’s high-end compact cameras, the PowerShot S95 and G12. The HS System delivers improved image quality – especially in low light situations. A pocket-sized Canon HS System camera with 1080p HD video, a 10x [...]

Usually we choose more wordy entries for Featured User Reviews. But the new Nikkor AF-S 28-300mm VR zoom lens is something special for Nikon users and I wanted to highlight it by sharing our first user review, written by member freedom1500. I’ve been hearing great things about this lens through the grapevine and I got to take a look at it at my local pro shop, Pictureline. I’m amazed [...]

Below you’ll find high-resolution studio sample photos taken with the Olympus E-5 pro digital SLR. The E-5 is a 12-megapixel Four Thirds format digital SLR and Olympus claims they’ve done a bunch of stuff to improve the image quality over other 12-megapixel cameras that use the same sensor (that includes other Olympus DSLRs as well as Olympus and Panasonic Micro Four Thirds cameras). [...]

Spend some quality time with Canon’s new HD-video-shooting prosumer camera.
By Phil Ryan
Hands On: Canon EOS 60D
You don’t have to search far to find an overriding theme for Canon in 2010: high-definition video. Every new DSLR introduced by the company this year has included it, and the new EOS 60D ($1099, body only) is no exception.
While the new camera has the same video capabilities [...]

I recently was hired to do three more vignette-type pieces for Sewanee: The University of the South. See the three videos I already completed for them here: one, two, three.
Being an alumnus myself, I know my way around the 13,000 acre campus well and with it being ranked the most beautiful campus by the Princeton Review this year, it makes for some picturesque shooting.
I was scheduled to shoot the [...]

I was pumped to get my 28″ Westcott Apollo Soft Box in the mail today and immediately did some tests with it. I’ve seen it used all over the internet and I know it’s one of the most popular and cheapest options out there for a soft box light modifier and wanted to see how useful it might be for my work.
The infamous Apollo softbox
Questions I had were:
How will it work with my [...]

Review based on a production NEX-3 and NEX-5, updated to reflect firmware v1.03
Ever since Panasonic and Olympus created their Micro Four Thirds mirrorless system, all the talk has been about what the other players in the market will do. Micro Four Thirds has been steadily building its market share, seemingly without response from the three companies that account for over 80% of DSLR sales (Canon, [...]

The Best Yet?
The EOS 550D‘s specifications certainly do appear to put it well ahead of its rivals. Canon’s 18-megapixel APS-C sensor has a 4-megapixel advantage over the best of the rest (Pentax, Samsung, Sony), while arch-rival Nikon is still using 12-megapixel sensors in its own APS-C format digital SLRs, giving away no fewer than 6 million pixels to the Canon.
Megapixels are no guarantee of [...]

This is a brief hands-on review on poor man’s 70-200mm ƒ/2.8G AF-S ED-IF VR / VRII alternative, the classic Nikon 80-200mm ƒ/2.8D AF ED. Enjoy. Thisvideo is available in High Definition (HD), hover the mouse above “360p” to extend out different video quality options, for HD (High Definition), click on 720p or 1080p. If you are having trouble watching the video smoothly, add this [...]

Panasonic has followed this design path for five years now… so I guess you could say things seem to be working for the approach.
The essence is an attractive, slim camera with touches of steel, easy to find external buttons and a delightfully simple viewfinder menu to adjust the taps and tools in your picture making … and available in black, silver, red and blue.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR1 ventures [...]

Just a quick note to let readers know that Peter Burian and Jack Neubart have both published their new reviews of the Pentax K-x and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 on Photocrati. We have not covered a lot of camera gear from those manufacturers below, so this represents the opening of a new line of reviews on the site. For other great reviews of these cameras, try the Pentax K-x or Lumix DMC-GH1 pages [...]

Jack Neubart, one of the Senior Technical Editors at Photocrati, has just published a nice, user-friendly Canon T1i Review . Some of his thoughts: ” Small and compact, a good choice-if you don’t mind some compromises . I’m not really sure that Canon knows exactly what to do with this camera. It seems simple enough, judging by weight and size, but is otherwise a complex tool with [...]

Butterfly Lighting is one of the most flattering and artistic ways of lighting the face. As it’s name would denote, Butterfly Lighting is created by the way in which you angle the light to fall on the face of your subject. Often used by celebrity photographers, this style of lighting can be achieved by a single off camera light and a reflector.
