Yesterday, Adobe announced the final version of their powerful Lightroom 4 photography workflow and editing software. There are a lot of significant improvements to Lightroom 4 but the most important change is the new price. In the past, Lightroom has sold for US $300 but Adobe lowered the price to $149 and $79 to upgrade from a previous version. It looks like the $79 upgrade price is also available [...]

Last week at the Mobile World Conference (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, Nokia introduced the 808 PureView smartphone. Why am I writing about a smartphone on a photography Web site? Well, the title of this article should answer that question. In a bold digital imaging strategy, the new Nokia 808 PureView phone has a 41-megapixel imaging sensor for photos and video. It’s a 1/1.2-inch sensor – [...]

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is official! This has to be one of Canon’s most anticipated cameras, ever. It’s been three and a half years since the 5D Mk II was announced (September, 2008) and photographers have been (im)patiently expecting a replacement since late 2009. It’s been quite a wait but I think Canon shooters are going to be very happy with 5D Mark III. The announcement was timed [...]

According to an article in the British Journal of Photography, Kodak is going to stop production of three professional transparency (slide) films, Ektachrome E100G, Ektachrome E100VS and Elite Chrome Extra Color 1. Kodak also recently announced that, as part of their reorganization strategy (Kodak bankruptcy article), they will no longer be making digital cameras. I guess removing unprofitable [...]

There are a few photography gear deals today – February 29th – Leap Day. The best one I’ve seen so far is Adobe Lightroom 3 for $89. The normal price for Lightroom is $300 so this is over 60% off. That’s a hell of a discount. It also gets you set to upgrade for $99 when Adobe releases Lightroom 4. That won’t be long since there’s already a beta version of Lightroom 4 available [...]

Canon has announced that their EOS-1D X professional digital SLR, announced last fall, will be delayed until “the end of April 2012.” Originally, availability was projected for March 2012, so that it would be ready ahead of the upcoming London Olympics. Like other big camera makers the earthquake in Japan and flooding in Southeast Asia disrupted Canon’s camera production. It’s also possible [...]

PocketWizard just announced the PocketWizard Plus III radio slave. Although there are now some viable alternatives, PocketWizards are still the radio flash and camera trigger of choice for most photographers. The new PocketWizard Plus III Transceiver offers a whole lot of new features *and* costs $30 less than the PocketWizard Plus II. Among the upgrades are a smaller, lighter internal antenna [...]

Unless you live in a cave, you must be aware of the huge financial scandal surrounding Olympus. And by huge, I mean HUGE – one-point-seven-billion-dollars-huge. I’ve been watching it all unfold but since I write about cameras not business I mostly kept my thoughts to myself. However, with Kodak’s recent reorganization and the generally poor global economic situation, the ongoing controversy [...]

It looks like 2012 is going to be a big year for rugged, waterproof point-and-shoot cameras. In the past few months all of the major camera makers have introduced a new waterproof camera. The most recent announcement is the new Pentax Optio WG-2 GPS camera. I lost count quite a while ago but Pentax says the WG-2 is their 13th waterproof digital point-and-shoot camera since they introduced the [...]

Olympus just introduced a new waterproof, shockproof “Tough” camera, the TG-810 iHS. Those of you who read my articles and reviews are probably aware I’ve been critical of Olympus waterproof point-and-shoot camera image quality for the past couple of years (see my Olympus TG-610 Review). I’ve also seen a lot of user reviews complaining about the slow reaction time with the Olympus Tough [...]

There’s a brand new Micro Four Thirds camera in town – the Olympus E-M5. It’s got a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF) and it’s dust and weather-sealed. Instead of making the E-M5 part of their Pen camera line, Olympus decided to differentiate it and pay tribute to their camera-making heritage by creating a whole new line of cameras named after their venerable OM 35mm film SLRs. The [...]

Canon announced three new SLR lenses last night, the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM and EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM. Designed for, “harsh and rigorous conditions,” the new 24-70mm f/2.8L has improved weather-sealing, durability and optics, including new UD elements, a Super UD element and new lens coatings. The two wide-angle primes both add Canon’s IS Optical Image Stabilization [...]

It’s been about three years since Canon introduced their first waterproof, shockproof digital camera, the PowerShot D10 (learn more about the Canon PowerShot D10). A lot of new rugged waterproof cameras have become available since then and I’ve been wondering if and when Canon would update the D10. Well, last night Canon announced the PowerShot D20, a completely redesigned waterproof, shockproof [...]

The boat this camera came in on must have sunk as soon as it reached the harbor because it was a seriously leaky vessel. However, you never know how much of what the rumor sites say is true until the announcement is official. Well, the Nikon D800 “Multimedia HD-SLR” is now official. The rumors were actually pretty much right on target this time. In a departure from previous strategy, the [...]

It has a brand-new, large 16-megapixel APS-C sensor, a 3-inch 921k-dot LCD display and full HD video with selectable frame rates, including 60 frames per second at 720p. Those features alone make the new The Pentax K-01 (pronounced ‘kay- zero-one’) solid competition for other mirrorless camera [...]

Fujifilm has announced pricing on what will probably be one of the most popular cameras of 2012, the X-Pro1. The Fujifilm X-Pro1 was announced a few weeks ago at the annual CES tradeshow in Las Vegas and the photography community is very excited about it. It’s a rangefinder-style digital camera with interchangeable lenses, an innovative hybrid viewfinder and Fujifilm’s unique new 16-megapixel [...]

Nikon introduced their second waterproof digital camera, today. The $120 price makes the new 10-megapixel Nikon Coolpix S30 one of the most affordable rugged digital cameras available. It’s waterproof to about 10 feet and can handle drops of about 2.5 feet, making it a great, inexpensive option for people on a budget or families who want a camera that can take some abuse. The lens is a 3x 29.1-87.3mm [...]

Panasonic has updated their venerable ZS line of pocket superzoom cameras with the new Lumix ZS20. Last year, one of my favorite compact cameras was Panasonic’s wonderful ZS10 pocket superzoom. Panasonic packed so much into the ZS10 – it’s the Swiss Army Knife of point-and-shoot cameras. I took it to Europe last summer and it was the perfect pocket travel camera – able to take pictures [...]

Both cameras are waterproof, freezeproof, dustproof and shockproof. But as Panasonic’s top dog rugged camera, the TS4 gets [...]

Sony has upped the ante in the outdoor camera game with the announcement of the $500, 18-megapixel Cybershot DSC-TX200V waterproof point-and-shoot. I believe that’s $100 more than any previous waterproof point-and-shoot camera and Sony says the new 18-megapixel CMOS sensor is the “highest-resolution currently offered in the ‘point and shoot’ market.” The TX200V also has an interesting [...]

There was some sad news for the photo industry last week. Michihiro Yamaki, the founder and CEO of Sigma Corporation, passed away at the age of 78. If you’re a photographer, Michihiro Yamaki definitely had an influence on your photography. 2011 was the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Sigma, which began with Yamaki’s invention of the first rear-attached lens converter, a bit of gear [...]
