Yesterday, Adobe announced the final version of their powerful Lightroom 4 photography workflow and editing software. There are a lot of significant improvements to Lightroom 4 but the most important change is the new price. In the past, Lightroom has sold for US $300 but Adobe lowered the price to $149 and $79 to upgrade from a previous version. It looks like the $79 upgrade price is also available [...]

Last week at the Mobile World Conference (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, Nokia introduced the 808 PureView smartphone. Why am I writing about a smartphone on a photography Web site? Well, the title of this article should answer that question. In a bold digital imaging strategy, the new Nokia 808 PureView phone has a 41-megapixel imaging sensor for photos and video. It’s a 1/1.2-inch sensor – [...]

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is official! This has to be one of Canon’s most anticipated cameras, ever. It’s been three and a half years since the 5D Mk II was announced (September, 2008) and photographers have been (im)patiently expecting a replacement since late 2009. It’s been quite a wait but I think Canon shooters are going to be very happy with 5D Mark III. The announcement was timed [...]

Canon has announced that their EOS-1D X professional digital SLR, announced last fall, will be delayed until “the end of April 2012.” Originally, availability was projected for March 2012, so that it would be ready ahead of the upcoming London Olympics. Like other big camera makers the earthquake in Japan and flooding in Southeast Asia disrupted Canon’s camera production. It’s also possible [...]

The Sony Alpha NEX-5N is version 2.5 of Sony’s NEX compact mirrorless camera system. Sony introduced their NEX mirrorless camera line in 2009 and updated it with a new entry level model, the NEX-C3 in the spring of 2011. The 16-megapixel NEX-5N was introduced in late 2011 with a new 16-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, improved auto focus, and improved AVCHD video. The camera body is very small, [...]

Announced at the beginning of February, the new 16-megapixel Nikon Coolpix P310 is designed for the photographer who wants a serious camera they can easily carry in a pocket. Equipped with a fast f/1.8 zoom lens, full manual exposure controls and sensitivity to ISO 6400, the P310 will be especially attractive to photographers who do a lot of low light shooting. The P310 also has full HD video [...]

The Canon PowerShot S100 is one of the top high-end compact cameras right now and probably the best current camera that actually fits in your pocket. The S100 is especially good for serious photographers who want a pocket camera that provides excellent image quality and lots of control. I first got to see it in person at the PhotoPlus Expo in New York last fall and I really liked what I saw (Canon [...]

It looks like 2012 is going to be a big year for rugged, waterproof point-and-shoot cameras. In the past few months all of the major camera makers have introduced a new waterproof camera. The most recent announcement is the new Pentax Optio WG-2 GPS camera. I lost count quite a while ago but Pentax says the WG-2 is their 13th waterproof digital point-and-shoot camera since they introduced the [...]

Olympus just introduced a new waterproof, shockproof “Tough” camera, the TG-810 iHS. Those of you who read my articles and reviews are probably aware I’ve been critical of Olympus waterproof point-and-shoot camera image quality for the past couple of years (see my Olympus TG-610 Review). I’ve also seen a lot of user reviews complaining about the slow reaction time with the Olympus Tough [...]

There’s a brand new Micro Four Thirds camera in town – the Olympus E-M5. It’s got a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF) and it’s dust and weather-sealed. Instead of making the E-M5 part of their Pen camera line, Olympus decided to differentiate it and pay tribute to their camera-making heritage by creating a whole new line of cameras named after their venerable OM 35mm film SLRs. The [...]

It’s been about three years since Canon introduced their first waterproof, shockproof digital camera, the PowerShot D10 (learn more about the Canon PowerShot D10). A lot of new rugged waterproof cameras have become available since then and I’ve been wondering if and when Canon would update the D10. Well, last night Canon announced the PowerShot D20, a completely redesigned waterproof, shockproof [...]

The boat this camera came in on must have sunk as soon as it reached the harbor because it was a seriously leaky vessel. However, you never know how much of what the rumor sites say is true until the announcement is official. Well, the Nikon D800 “Multimedia HD-SLR” is now official. The rumors were actually pretty much right on target this time. In a departure from previous strategy, the [...]

They made it official yesterday – the Pentax K-01 compact mirrorless system camera is for real. It has a brand-new, large 16-megapixel APS-C sensor, a 3-inch 921k-dot LCD display and full HD video with selectable frame rates, including 60 frames per second at 720p. Those features alone make the new The Pentax K-01 (pronounced ‘kay- zero-one’) solid competition for other mirrorless camera [...]

Panasonic has updated their venerable ZS line of pocket superzoom cameras with the new Lumix ZS20. Last year, one of my favorite compact cameras was Panasonic’s wonderful ZS10 pocket superzoom. Panasonic packed so much into the ZS10 – it’s the Swiss Army Knife of point-and-shoot cameras. I took it to Europe last summer and it was the perfect pocket travel camera – able to take pictures [...]

Panasonic announced two new rugged outdoor point-and-shoot cameras, today. The 12-megapixel Panasonic Lumix TS4 is their new top-of-the-line, GPS-equipped waterproof, shockproof compact camera; and the Lumix TS20 is an affordable outdoor camera with a sub- $200 price tag. Both cameras are waterproof, freezeproof, dustproof and shockproof. But as Panasonic’s top dog rugged camera, the TS4 gets [...]

Sony has upped the ante in the outdoor camera game with the announcement of the $500, 18-megapixel Cybershot DSC-TX200V waterproof point-and-shoot. I believe that’s $100 more than any previous waterproof point-and-shoot camera and Sony says the new 18-megapixel CMOS sensor is the “highest-resolution currently offered in the ‘point and shoot’ market.” The TX200V also has an interesting [...]

The smallest interchangeable lens Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera yet, the Olympus E-PM1 definitely deserves more attention. So I was really happy to see this fine review show up a few days ago. It’s our first user review for the E-PM1 and the author, Anbesol, has supplied a lot of well-informed detail about the E-PM1’s performance – both positive and negative. This review is a textbook example [...]

Last year’s camera of the year was pretty obvious to me from early on. And it was the same this year. I took my time, let things settle and took a closer look at the other contenders to make sure I wasn’t missing something. There were four cameras in the running for me – the Sony NEX-7, the Sony Alpha SLT-A77, the Olympus E-P3 and the new Nikon 1 mirrorless camera system. But in the [...]

I had to rewrite this article a few times. My final and most significant rewrite occurred after I took a close look at the photos of the Samsung WB850F camera and found it to be wonderfully handsome. There was a time when “handsome” and Samsung did not often occur in the same sentence. Not if we were talking about cameras, anyway. That was a few years ago though, and the new Samsung WB850F [...]

There are two new HS superzooms in the Fujifilm FinePix compact camera family. The new Fujifilm FinePix HS30EXR and HS25EXR are built around a new 1\2-inch 16-megaixel EXR-CMOS sensor and 30x 24-720mm (equivalent) optical zoom lens and both cameras can capture full HD video. Both cameras are making their public debut at the annual CES tradeshow in Las Vegas, this week. The integrated 30x zoom [...]

Fujifilm introduced three new FinePix XP rugged point-and-shoot cameras at CES / PMA this week. The new 14-megapixel, GPS-tracking FinePix XP150 is Fujifilm’s new top dog waterproof, shockproof pocket camera – perfect for vacations and outdoor sports like rafting, snowboarding and rock climbing. The XP150 replaces the XP30 as Fujifilm’s top-of-the-line rugged point-and-shoot, adding full [...]

There’s exciting news for Adobe Lightroom users. Adobe has released a public beta version of Lightroom 4. It’s available as a free download to anyone who wants to download and install it. You don’t have to have a current version of Lightroom installed to use it. Of course, it is beta software so it’s a work in progress and you may encounter problems. It also won’t update your current [...]

Sigma has announced the launch of a new line of lenses designed specifically for Micro Four Thirds and Sony NEX compact system cameras – arguably the hottest camera market for 2012. They’re calling the new lens line, Digital Neo (DN) and launching it this week at the 2012 CES / PMA tradeshow in Las Vegas. To start, they’ve announced two fast prime lenses, the 30mm F2.8 EX DN and the 19mm [...]

Canon introduced a surprising new high-end compact camera today, the 14.3-megapixel PowerShot G1 X. I’ve been criticizing Canon’s high-end G-Series compact cameras for the past couple of years. I believe that with the current interchangeable lens camera options out there, a camera the size of the Canon G12 should have better image quality and changeable lenses. But I am not going to criticize the [...]

Nikon has announced a new flagship digital SLR, the 16-megapixel D4. I’m crunching the data, working on a detailed article right now. In the meantime, below you’ll find photos of the new Nikon D4 along with key features and specs. One thing is for sure – Nikon has the $6000 D4 aimed squarely at Canon’s recently announced EOS-1D X professional digital SLR.
