Sony has upped the ante in the outdoor camera game with the announcement of the $500, 18-megapixel Cybershot DSC-TX200V waterproof point-and-shoot. I believe that’s $100 more than any previous waterproof point-and-shoot camera and Sony says the new 18-megapixel CMOS sensor is the “highest-resolution currently offered in the ‘point and shoot’ market.” The TX200V also has an interesting [...]

Sony announced a couple of new 16-megapixel W-Series Cybershot point-and-shoot cameras, the DSC-WX70 and DSC-WX50. Both cameras have full HD video, a 5x 25-125mm optical zoom lens and “Clear Image Zoom” technology that effectively doubles the zoom range. They also both have built-in creative “Picture Effects” and new “Extra High Sensitivity” technology that’s supposed to improve [...]

Last year’s camera of the year was pretty obvious to me from early on. And it was the same this year. I took my time, let things settle and took a closer look at the other contenders to make sure I wasn’t missing something. There were four cameras in the running for me – the Sony NEX-7, the Sony Alpha SLT-A77, the Olympus E-P3 and the new Nikon 1 mirrorless camera system. But in the [...]

The Sony Alpha NEX-7 is Sony’s top-of-the-line interchangeable lens mirrorless camera and this is our first user review for the NEX-7. It was written by community member Greg McCary, one of my favorite photographers on the site and a man who knows his cameras. Greg owns Olympus, Leica and Sony cameras and he’s a very experienced photographer, so his opinions carry a lot of weight. I’ve been anxiously [...]

The Sony NEX-5N is a 16-megapixel mirrorless, interchangeable lens camera with full HD video and a 3-inch touchscreen display. I’m working on a complete Sony NEX-5N camera review and it should be done soon. But I’ve already completed a short hands-on video review of the NEX-5N. So if you can’t wait for the full review, you can watch the video now to get a quick peek at some [...]

The Sony Alpha NEX-5N is a compact system camera with a 16-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. We shot controlled studio tests at all ISO settings with the NEX-5N and the Sony 18-55mm kit lens. The sample photos were shot RAW in aperture priority mode at f/8. They were converted to 16-bit TIFF files with Lightroom and the graybar, text and logo were added in Photoshop before they were resaved as maximum [...]

Since their introduction in spring of 2010, the Sony Alpha NEX mirrorless cameras have become very popular with both serious photographers who want a high-performance compact camera, and casual photographers who like the smaller size and ease-of-use. I hadn’t seen the latest NEX cameras in person so I made it a point to take a closer look at the NEX line at the PhotoPlus Expo a couple of [...]

So far, the most exciting camera of 2011 is the Sony Alpha NEX-7. At least that’s what I think. The NEX-7 is a rangefinder-style mirrorless camera with a 24-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, beautiful 2.3-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, a tilting LCD display, full HD video and a new customizable control interface. To summarize – it’s totally badass. Back in August, when I [...]

The Sony NEX compact mirrorless camera system is one of the more exciting things to happen to camera technology in the past couple of years and it demonstrates Sony’s commitment to innovative camera design. Even though it looks more like a point-and-shoot camera than a digital SLR, Sony’s $650 entry-level NEX-C3 uses the same large APS-C sensor Sony used in last year’s award-winning Alpha [...]

Sony was a latecomer to digital SLRs. But don’t let that fool you into thinking they don’t have game. About six years ago they bought all of Konica-Minolta’s digital SLR patents and a few months later they released their digital SLR, the Sony Alpha A100. There was a lot of skepticism about Sony’s ability to make a competitive digital SLR. But the A100 showed the doubters [...]

The Sony Alpha SLT-A65 was announced last week along with the SLT-A77. It’s a 24-megapixel translucent mirror DSLR-style camera. I say, “DSLR-style” because the SLT-A65 replaces the TTL optical viewfinder of a traditional SLR with a 2.3-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF). The transparent mirror design makes the camera faster and allows it to use continuous auto focus [...]

I predicted 2011 was going to be a big year for Sony and they just came through in a big way. Last week they announced four new cameras, including the 24-megapixel Sony Alpha SLT-A77. The A77 is Sony’s new top-of-the-line transparent mirror SLT camera and the follow-up to our 2010 Camera Of The Year, the Sony Alpha SLT-A55. Although the A77 may look a lot like the mid-range digital SLR [...]

Sony’s new top-of-the-line NEX-7 mirrorless camera is a departure both in design and pricing. A lot of the new features and specs are also in the new, less expensive Sony Alpha NEX-5N (improved auto focus, reaction time, etc.). But Sony has clearly built the NEX-7 for professional photographers and serious enthusiasts. It has a super-high-resolution 24-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, which [...]

The new Sony Alpha NEX-5N is their fourth compact, mirrorless system camera and builds on the NEX platform with new features, improved performance and some interesting new accessories. Sony calls the NEX-5N a, “a giant step forward from its predecessor in terms of still image and HD video quality, Auto Focus and speed-of-capture performance.” The key improvements Sony gave the NEX-5N [...]

While browsing Creative Motion Design's blog I came across an eye catching ad for Sony's Bravia series of HDTVs. The complete video directed by Superfad had elements of slow motion, CGI effects, graphic design, animation, and photography. Luckily the good people over Hype Communications put together a make of video on how Superfad and the entire creative team was able to piece together this amazing [...]

This page has links to high-resolution studio sample photos taken with our 2010 Camera Of The Year, the Sony Alpha SLT-A55. We made test photos across the full sensitivity range, from ISO 100 to ISO 12,500. The images are downloadable so you can pixel peep, print and compare to your heart’s content. All sample photos were shot RAW in aperture priority at f/8 with the Sony 18-55mm kit lens [...]

Sony announced two new H Series digital cameras, the Cybershot DSC-HX100V and DSC-HX9V. The DSLR-looking Cybershot DSC-HX100V features a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonar T* lens with 30x optical zoom and a manual control ring to adjust focus or zoom, while the smaller Cybershot DSC-HX9V features a 24mm Sony G lens with 16x optical zoom.

We’ve had Camera Of The Year polls on PhotographyREVIEW.com for the past couple of years but I never actually published an article with my pick for Camera Of The Year. For 2010, I started a “Readers Choice” poll before the New Year and then let my thoughts percolate and settle for a few weeks before committing. I have now chosen my 2010 Camera Of The Year. My choice was based [...]

Look at most of the products Sony has released this year, not just cameras, and you'll notice that they have built 3D technology into just about every device possible. Their new compacts, the WX5 and the TX9 are no exception, with the press material touting them as "the world's smallest 3D cameras." Rather than opting for a two-lens system like Fujifilm, Sony is using the same 3D Sweep Panorama [...]
