There was some sad news for the photo industry last week. Michihiro Yamaki, the founder and CEO of Sigma Corporation, passed away at the age of 78. If you’re a photographer, Michihiro Yamaki definitely had an influence on your photography. 2011 was the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Sigma, which began with Yamaki’s invention of the first rear-attached lens converter, a bit of gear [...]

They’re calling the new lens line, Digital Neo (DN) and launching it this week at the 2012 CES / PMA tradeshow in Las Vegas. Sigma announced a new image-stabilized 180mm macro lens at CES today. The Sigma APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM is the world’s first 180mm macro lens to offer a true macro magnification ratio of 1:1. That means that it can capture images of subjects at their actual size. The 180mm focal length means you don’t have to get as close to macro subjects, making it excellent for insect photography. Over the years, in their various incarnations, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom lenses have been among the most popular lenses on PhotographyREVIEW.com. It seems like there’s always a Sigma 24-70mm in the top five lenses list on the Home page. That means more people are looking at our Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom lens review pages than any other lens on the site. It’s often been the most [...]

A great way to satisfy camera upgradeitis, improve your photography and save some money is to buy a new lens instead of a new camera. In fact, a new lens is usually a better decision. We took a look at a couple of great all-purpose Sigma zoom lenses at the PhotoPlus Expo in New York – the Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM and the Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM. If you’ve got [...]

Sigma has announced pricing and availability for their new 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 OS II lens, an 11.1x zoom featuring Sigma’s OS Optical Stabilization. The new 18-200mm OS II also adds Sigma’s top-of-the-line FLD glass (“F” Low Dispersion) to the lens, which could make it the best 18-200mm lens on the market. I love image-stabilized 18-200mm zoom lenses for backpacking, events [...]

I wrote this top five inexpensive zoom lens article in December of 2009 and I’ve updated it here for 2010 / 11. Giving a digital SLR as a gift isn’t practical or affordable for most of us (if you are shopping for a DSLR make sure to read my Top Five Beginner Digital SLRs guide). A new lens is often a better gift for a photographer than a new camera. Every photographer can use a new lens – especially [...]

The Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM wide-angle zoom lens was announced early this year and Sigma sent me one for review as soon as they had one available. It’s currently the widest non-fisheye lens on the market for APS-C digital SLRs like the Canon Digital Rebels, the EOS 7D, Nikon D7000, etc. I’ve been using it for a few months now and I absolutely love it. That’s right – no big build-up or [...]

Sigma's SD15 DSLR has existed, in theory, since way back in 2008, but has remained something of a mystery since then. But, apparently today is the big day and the SD15 body is hitting the streets here in the USA for a touch under $1,000. Inside, you'll find the Sigma's excellent 14.45-megapixel Foveon X3 sensor, similar to the one you'll find in the more-expensive SD14. Also worth noting is the [...]
