The Nikon D3100 is one of the hottest digital SLRs on the market right now. The great price (under $600 with a lens), plenty of features, excellent image quality and access to Nikon’s excellent lenses make it a no-brainer for first time digital SLR buyers or even serious photographers on a budget. The D3100 has a 14-megapixel sensor, ISO 3200 sensitivity (expandable to ISO 12,800), a 3-inch [...]

With the announcement of the Nikon 1 mirrorless camera system, the longest running rumor in the camera industry has been put to rest. Speculation about a Nikon EVIL camera (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens) started even before Panasonic and Olympus announced their Micro Four Thirds system partnership in 2008. To start, there will be two Nikon 1 system cameras, the J1 and the V1. Performance-wise [...]

Well it seems it could be a hell of a big day in the camera world. Not only will the Chronos film festival be opening on the 3rd of November with me introducing Koyaanasqatsi in Santa Fe, NM, but Canon have their “big announcement” which may or may not be a new camera and now RED have come out of the closet with what seems to be something we all thought would never happen: announcement [...]

Come on in – the water’s fine! Nikon has finally joined the rest of the kids in the pool. The other kids being Canon, Fujifilm, Olympus, Pentax, Panasonic, Samsung, Olympus and Kodak – and the pool being the rugged, waterproof camera market. The brand new Nikon Coolpix AW100 is Nikon’s first waterproof camera – since their Nikonos underwater 35mm film cameras, anyway. [...]

Nikon recently announced an inexpensive macro lens for DX (APS-C crop sensor) digital SLR shooters. The new AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G lens has an effective focal length of 60mm and a very nice suggested retail price of US $279.95. It has a true macro reproduction ratio of 1:1 and focuses as close as 6.4 inches (162.6mm) for close-up photos of insects, flowers, etc.
Although $279 probably [...]

I had the pleasure of using the Nikon D3s pro digital SLR in 2010. It is, without a doubt, the king of action and low light photography right now (my Nikon D3s vs. Canon EOS-1D Mark IV comparison). It was painful to return my test camera to Nikon. I know zerodog personally, so I was happy to see his review for the D3s. I know he uses it all the time and pushes it hard so his review carries a lot of [...]

I chose cor55′s review of the Nikon Super Coolscan 8000 ED film scanner as a Featured User Review because that film scanner gets great reviews and I wanted to highlight film scanners as a must-have accessory for serious film photographers. The Coolscan 9000 has replaced the Nikon Super Coolscan 8000 but if you read the user reviews you’ll see the 8000 actually appears to be more popular. [...]

This page has high-resolution sample photos taken in the PhotographyREVIEW.com test studio with the Nikon D7000 digital SLR. Sample photos were shot RAW at all ISO settings at f/8 in aperture priority mode with the AF-S 18-105mm VR kit lens. White balance was set for the tungsten preset. The images were converted to 16-bit TIFF files at the default Adobe Lightroom settings and the logo, text [...]

Nikon announced 8 new Coolpix compact digital cameras yesterday, including the new S9100 pocket superzoom. The Nikon Coolpix S9100 packs an 18x zoom lens (25-450mm equivalent) into a pocket-sized package. That puts the S9100 in a first place tie with the Samsung WB700 for longest zoom on a pocket camera. It has a 12-megpixel CMOS sensor with sensitivity up to ISO 3200 and 1080p full HD video.
Pocket [...]

I recently had the pleasure of using the AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G Nikkor zoom lens with the Nikon D3s digital SLR. The lens is a tank but the wonderful optics more than make up for the extra size and weight. When I saw Prettym1k3’s excellent user review for the Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G zoom lens, I knew it had to be elevated to a Featured User Review. It’s an enthusiastic, detailed review [...]

Nikon sent me their latest pocket superzoom camera, the 12-megapixel Coolpix S8100, a few weeks ago. Like other pocket superzooms it has a 10x zoom lens and it fits in a pants or shirt pocket. Besides the 30-300mm Nikkor ED VR zoom lens, the S8100 also has full HD video, a 5 frames-per-second full-resolution burst rate, great close-up shooting and a 240 frames-per-second slow motion video mode. I wrote this top five inexpensive zoom lens article in December of 2009 and I’ve updated it here for 2010 / 11. Giving a digital SLR as a gift isn’t practical or affordable for most of us (if you are shopping for a DSLR make sure to read my Top Five Beginner Digital SLRs guide). A new lens is often a better gift for a photographer than a new camera. Every photographer can use a new lens – especially [...]

A Nikon D7000 digital SLR showed up for review this week. I haven’t had a chance to use it much yet but I did hustle up a little box-opening and demo video for you. I was excited [...]

The Nikon D7000 started showing up in stores a couple of weeks ago and it’s been the most popular DSLR on PhotographyREVIEW.com for over a month now (see the Top Five DSLR list on our Home page). Yesterday I threw out a line on Twitter to get some D7000 user reviews. Two reviews got posted (please write your own if you have a D7000) and this one by Joe Murphy was worthy of being elevated to Featured [...]

Usually we choose more wordy entries for Featured User Reviews. But the new Nikkor AF-S 28-300mm VR zoom lens is something special for Nikon users and I wanted to highlight it by sharing our first user review, written by member freedom1500. I’ve been hearing great things about this lens through the grapevine and I got to take a look at it at my local pro shop, Pictureline. I’m amazed [...]
