Full frame…kind of magical words for many, including me. Since the Canon 5DmkII came out all the way back in November 2008 there has not been one full frame DSLR that shoots full HD video come out. Countless crop sensor cameras, but no full frame ones.
Quite a while back we had Canon announce their top end 1DX which is due for release next month, I have not seen one yet so no idea on what [...]

The boat this camera came in on must have sunk as soon as it reached the harbor because it was a seriously leaky vessel. However, you never know how much of what the rumor sites say is true until the announcement is official. Well, the Nikon D800 “Multimedia HD-SLR” is now official. The rumors were actually pretty much right on target this time. In a departure from previous strategy, the [...]

Nikon introduced their second waterproof digital camera, today. The $120 price makes the new 10-megapixel Nikon Coolpix S30 one of the most affordable rugged digital cameras available. It’s waterproof to about 10 feet and can handle drops of about 2.5 feet, making it a great, inexpensive option for people on a budget or families who want a camera that can take some abuse. The lens is a 3x 29.1-87.3mm [...]

Nikon announced two new L-Series Coolpix cameras this week. The Nikon Coolpix L810 is a 16-megapixel compact superzoom camera with a 26x 22.5-585mm (equivalent) optical zoom lens, a 3-inch high-resolution LCD display and 720p HD video. The Nikon Coolpix L26 is a compact, budget digital camera with a 16-megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom and 720p HD video. Both cameras are part of Nikon’s L “Life” [...]

I was pleased to see Footski’s review for the Nikon Coolpix P300 compact camera show up recently. The Nikon P300’s super-fast f/1.8 aperture lens sets it apart from all but one compact camera (the Olympus XZ-1). It’s a very serious camera in a deceptively small point-and-shoot sized body. I’m glad to give it some extra attention by making Footski’s P300 review a Featured User Review. Of [...]

PhotographyREVIEW.com member and forum moderator, Jeff Impey, better known as Grandpaw, took it upon himself to create a Nikon D7000 Tips thread on the Nikon Forum. Since he began the thread in August of 2011, Grandpaw has added over 25 separate, numbered tips for Nikon D7000 camera owners and the thread has been viewed well over 5000 times. Some of the tips included are: how to access the virtual [...]

Nikon has announced a new flagship digital SLR, the 16-megapixel D4. I’m crunching the data, working on a detailed article right now. In the meantime, below you’ll find photos of the new Nikon D4 along with key features and specs. One thing is for sure – Nikon has the $6000 D4 aimed squarely at Canon’s recently announced EOS-1D X professional digital SLR.

The Nikon 1 system is Nikon’s first foray into the world of mirrorless cameras. They introduced two cameras back in September, the J1 and V1. I’ve been using the $650 J1 (price includes 10-30mm kit lens), the less expensive of the two Nikon 1 mirrorless cameras. Both the J1 and the V1 share the same 10-megapixel CX-format sensor, 3-inch LCD display, Expeed 3 processing, full HD video [...]

I’m putting the final touches on my Nikon 1 compact mirrorless system J1 camera review right now. But I’ve got a hands-on Nikon 1 intro video with some action sample clips up on the PhotographyREVIEW.com YouTube channel. It gives an overview of the new Nikon 1 mirrorless camera system as well as a quickie tour of the 10-megapixel J1 camera. Most important, it has action sample video [...]

Earlier this week, Nikon announced a new flagship speedlight flash for their digital SLRs. The Nikon SB-910 has a new, easier to use control interface with a dedicated menu button. It has a zoom range of 17-200mm and automatically detects whether it’s being used with an FX or DX format camera so it can get the zoom right. It’s fully compatible with Nikon’s Creative Lighting [...]

The Nikon Coolpix AW100 is Nikon’s first rugged, outdoor camera. Most rugged point-and-shoot cameras have mediocre image quality and I’ve been waiting for a camera company to step up and make one where image quality is a higher priority. Nikon claims image quality is one of the main strengths of the AW100 so I was anxious to get one in my hands for testing. Like most other rugged [...]

The 2011 Holiday Season is upon us and I’m sure a lot of photographers would love to receive either the Canon PowerShot G12 or the Nikon Coolpix P7100 as a gift. The Canon G-Series cameras have long been among the most popular compact digital cameras – especially for serious photographers who want something small, light and powerful to compliment their digital SLR gear. The Nikon Coolpix [...]

The new Nikon 1 interchangeable lens mirrorless camera system has been a source of controversy since it was announced. The new 10-megapixel “CX” sensor format is smaller than the Four Thirds sensor used in the Olympus and Panasonic Micro Four Thirds compact system cameras and a lot of people believe that the image quality is too compromised by the smaller sensor. I invite you to [...]

Last week I wrote an article entitled, “Why You should buy the Canon EOS Rebel T3i.” I’m sure a lot of readers took that to mean I had a Canon bias. That is not at all the case. Really, that article was about why you should buy a cheaper camera and use your money for lenses instead. To that end, I now present a similar ode to the Nikon D5100 digital SLR.
Here’s why you [...]

The 14-megapixel Nikon Coolpix L120 superzoom is a great option for people who want a powerful camera without the cost, size or intimidation factor of a DSLR. I hadn’t seen it before so I took a closer look and got some photos of it at the PhotoPlus Expo in New York. It’s got a 21x 25-525mm zoom lens, a 3-inch LCD display, 720p HD video and Program shooting mode to keep things simple. [...]

A couple of months ago Nikon announced their first rugged, waterproof point-and-shoot camera, the Coolpix AW100. I got my first close look at the AW100 this last week at the annual PhotoPlus Expo in New York City. They had a cool display at their booth with three AW100s mounted on a mountain bike. The camera feels good in the hand, it’s totally pocketable, has solid waterproof / rugged [...]

Nikon sent me their new J1 compact interchangeable lens camera about a week ago. I shot a ton with it over the weekend and, since it’s new, I decided to hustle out a short “first look” article. The Nikon J1 is about the size of a pocket superzoom camera if you leave the lens off. With a lens mounted it’s a little big for a pants pocket, although it’s still smaller [...]

The Nikon D3100 is one of the hottest digital SLRs on the market right now. The great price (under $600 with a lens), plenty of features, excellent image quality and access to Nikon’s excellent lenses make it a no-brainer for first time digital SLR buyers or even serious photographers on a budget. The D3100 has a 14-megapixel sensor, ISO 3200 sensitivity (expandable to ISO 12,800), a 3-inch [...]

Below, you’ll find high-resolution studio sample photos taken with the Nikon D3100, a 14-megapixel entry-level digital SLR. Test photos were shot RAW in aperture priority at f/8 across the D3100′s full sensitivity range – ISO 200 through ISO 3200 – plus the expanded settings – ISO 100, 6400 and 12,800. The test photos were converted without adjustment to TIFF files [...]

With the announcement of the Nikon 1 mirrorless camera system, the longest running rumor in the camera industry has been put to rest. Speculation about a Nikon EVIL camera (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens) started even before Panasonic and Olympus announced their Micro Four Thirds system partnership in 2008. To start, there will be two Nikon 1 system cameras, the J1 and the V1. Performance-wise [...]

Well it seems it could be a hell of a big day in the camera world. Not only will the Chronos film festival be opening on the 3rd of November with me introducing Koyaanasqatsi in Santa Fe, NM, but Canon have their “big announcement” which may or may not be a new camera and now RED have come out of the closet with what seems to be something we all thought would never happen: announcement [...]

Come on in – the water’s fine! Nikon has finally joined the rest of the kids in the pool. The other kids being Canon, Fujifilm, Olympus, Pentax, Panasonic, Samsung, Olympus and Kodak – and the pool being the rugged, waterproof camera market. The brand new Nikon Coolpix AW100 is Nikon’s first waterproof camera – since their Nikonos underwater 35mm film cameras, anyway. [...]

Nikon launched a bunch of new Coolpix compact digital cameras last night. Among those cameras was the P7100, the latest incarnation of their high-end, full-featured rangefinder-style compact. The Nikon Coolpix P7100 has a large, 1/1.7-inch, 10.1-megapixel CCD sensor and captures 720p HD video as well as still photos. It has a 7x 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 (equivalent) VR zoom lens with two ED elements [...]

Nikon recently announced an inexpensive macro lens for DX (APS-C crop sensor) digital SLR shooters. The new AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G lens has an effective focal length of 60mm and a very nice suggested retail price of US $279.95. It has a true macro reproduction ratio of 1:1 and focuses as close as 6.4 inches (162.6mm) for close-up photos of insects, flowers, etc.
Although $279 probably [...]

I had the pleasure of using the Nikon D3s pro digital SLR in 2010. It is, without a doubt, the king of action and low light photography right now (my Nikon D3s vs. Canon EOS-1D Mark IV comparison). It was painful to return my test camera to Nikon. I know zerodog personally, so I was happy to see his review for the D3s. I know he uses it all the time and pushes it hard so his review carries a lot of [...]
