We've finished putting Nikon's new all-in-one through its paces in our lab: click [...]

Nikon announced the new 85mm f/1.4G AF-S last August, as a replacement to the venerable 85mm f/1.4D, in existence since 1995. The new lens adds an AF-S focusing motor (and thus compatibility with all of Nikon's camera bodies), rounded diaphragm blades, weather sealing, and nano-crystal coating. The results when used wide open at f/1.4 are a bit surprising: to find out what we mean, you'll have to [...]

We've revived image stabilization (IS) testing over on SLRgear, using a simpler process, but still using the all-important quantitative measures to decide thresholds between various levels of blurring. After almost a year of not having posted any image stabilization (IS) test results on SLRgear, we had to finally admit that schedule and limited resources meant there wasn't any way to integrate our [...]

Sigma released several new lenses as this past year's PMA, one of which was the ultrawide zoom lens, the Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM. Essentially an APS-C version of their popular 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6, the lens uses new FLD glass elements which Sigma compares to the performance given by fluorite lenses. In our testing, we've found that there may be something to this claim: click here for our full review [...]

Today we take a look at another one of the Zeiss manual-focus lenses, the Carl Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 Planar. Many a photographer might scoff at an expensive lens that doesn't even have autofocus, but the images this lens can produce might be enough to make them think twice. When working with the fast f/1.4 aperture, it doesn't hurt to have a whopping 250 degrees of manual focusing action. Click here to [...]

In a world of computers and automatic settings, Carl Zeiss has been quietly manufacturing a line of manual-focus lenses compatible with a wide variety of SLR camera bodies. The Carl Zeiss 35mm f/2 Distagon is one of these lenses, noteworthy for its heavy duty construction, old school features (an aperture ring!) and complete absence of autofocus. Is the hefty price tag justified, especially when considering [...]
