Canon announced three new SLR lenses last night, the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM and EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM. Designed for, “harsh and rigorous conditions,” the new 24-70mm f/2.8L has improved weather-sealing, durability and optics, including new UD elements, a Super UD element and new lens coatings. The two wide-angle primes both add Canon’s IS Optical Image Stabilization [...]

It’s been about three years since Canon introduced their first waterproof, shockproof digital camera, the PowerShot D10 (learn more about the Canon PowerShot D10). A lot of new rugged waterproof cameras have become available since then and I’ve been wondering if and when Canon would update the D10. Well, last night Canon announced the PowerShot D20, a completely redesigned waterproof, shockproof [...]

This is a project I’ve wanted to do for a long time – a series of “What’s In My Camera Bag” videos, featuring different kinds of pro photographers and their gear. Seeing what we carry in our camera bags and backpacks gives a lot of insight into how we shoot and what’s necessary to get the job done. This video is just the first of many. A lot of my work is backcountry action sports [...]

Canon introduced a surprising new high-end compact camera today, the 14.3-megapixel PowerShot G1 X. I’ve been criticizing Canon’s high-end G-Series compact cameras for the past couple of years. I believe that with the current interchangeable lens camera options out there, a camera the size of the Canon G12 should have better image quality and changeable lenses. But I am not going to criticize the [...]

The Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS is one of the best-selling point-and-shoot digital cameras right now. It has a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor with Canon’s HS system, a combination of sensor technology and image processing that Canon says delivers improved low light photo quality. The 300 HS also has a 2.7-inch LCD display, 1080p HD video and a 5x zoom lens (24-120mm equivalent) with Canon’s [...]

For outdoor photographers like me, the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS pro zoom lens was very exciting when it was announced last summer (2010). It offers the reach of a 300mm zoom lens in a lighter, pro-quality, backcountry-friendly package. And from all reports, the image quality and auto focus performance are both very good. At about US $1500, it’s not a cheap lens, but it’s not unreasonable [...]

The 2011 Holiday Season is upon us and I’m sure a lot of photographers would love to receive either the Canon PowerShot G12 or the Nikon Coolpix P7100 as a gift. The Canon G-Series cameras have long been among the most popular compact digital cameras – especially for serious photographers who want something small, light and powerful to compliment their digital SLR gear. The Nikon Coolpix [...]

It’s tiny, has great point-and-shoot features, and it benefits from Canon’s HS System, which combines a good sensor and DIGIC 4 processing for improved low light image quality. One of the surprises for me at this year’s PhotoPlus Expo was the Canon PowerShot S100 – specifically, the silver model. The S100 packs a lot of features into a body that comfortably fits in your pants pocket. It’s a Canon HS System camera with a large 1/1.7-inch 12-megapixel CMOS sensor, 24-120mm f/2.0-5.9 zoom lens (35mm equivalent), RAW shooting, full HD video, manual exposure [...]

Last night, Canon announced two new professional, interchangeable lens video cameras. These aren’t the shoulder-mounted camcorders that most people think of when they think of high-end video. Rather, Canon’s new Cinema EOS System is based on the recent HD DSLR video revolution – digital SLRs that can also capture HD video. The main announcement was for the Canon EOS C300 interchangeable-lens [...]

Why should you buy the Canon EOS Rebel T3i? The Canon EOS Rebel T3i – or the EOS 600D, as it’s known outside the US – has been one of the most popular cameras on the market since it was introduced. Its combination of great features and image quality for well under $1000 make it a great digital SLR choice for all kinds of photographers and video shooters. That’s right [...]

If you’re looking for a versatile camera that can do it all and won’t break the bank or your arm, the new 12-megapixel Canon PowerShot SX40 HS superzoom might be the camera for you. It was just introduced last month so I made sure to check it out when I was in New York last week for the PhotoPlus Expo. The SX40 HS has a huge, 35x 24-840mm (35mm equiv.) image stabilized optical zoom lens, [...]

The Canon EOS-1D X is the first full-frame digital SLR to be introduced since the Nikon D3s, exactly two years ago. The 1D X was announced two weeks ago but very few people actually got to see it in person so I was psyched to go to the PhotoPlus Expo and a Canon intro event in New York City last week. I got to see the camera in person, ask more questions and even play with it a bit. This article [...]

It’s easy to get jaded when you write about digital cameras. The lifecycle of most is about 6 months and after a while they start to blur together. But when Canon introduces a new flagship EOS-1D body – especially one that’s supposed to replace the four-year-old top dog EOS-1Ds Mark III – I expect big things. The good news is it looks like Canon is delivering with this [...]

With an excellent feature-set and a very friendly price, the Canon EOS Rebel 600D (called the EOS Rebel T3i in the US) has been one of the most popular and best-selling cameras in 2011. So I was happy to see this fine user review by community member Anthony Reiss. It gives me a chance to give the T3i / 600D some well-deserved extra attention.
If you own the Canon EOS 600D / Rebel T3i, please share [...]

Canon announced three new compact PowerShot digital cameras today. The most exciting of the three – to me, anyway – is the new Canon PowerShot ELPH 510 HS pocket superzoom. I’m really into pocket superzoom cameras and I believe this is the first superzoom Canon has included in their ultra-compact ELPH point-and-shoot camera line. The 12-megapixel PowerShot ELPH 510 HS shoots 1080p [...]

Canon added a couple of new HS System cameras to their ultra-compact, stylish Digital ELPH line. The totally pocketable Canon PowerShot ELPH 310 HS has an 8x zoom lens, a 12.1-megapixel CMOS sensor with Canon’s HS System for improved low light image quality, 1080p full HD video and it comes in a rainbow of colors. The ELPH 310 HS also has a High-Speed Burst mode capable of 8.7-frames per second, [...]

The PowerShot SX150 IS has a 12x 28-336mm zoom lens, 720p HD video, a 3-inch LCD display and manual shooting modes as well as Smart Auto. When I tell people that I grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, everyone always asks me what it's like to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). I always try to explain how it looks by relating it to a laser show or smoke streams but I've never found a way to describe it to someone who hasn't seen it for themselves. Two days ago Terje Sorgjerd created the best visual representation of the Aurora Borealis [...]

Karl Taylor is an excellent photographer from England who has become a leading teacher in the "how to" photography market. In his latest video he explains a few lighting techniques he uses in the studio while shooting some crazy hair styles. Karl is using a single Elinchrom monolight but is pairing it up with two Canon 580EX flashes. In the video he explains why this setup is ideal for his lighting [...]

This is our first user review for the latest version of Canon’s 70-200mm pro workhorse zoom lens. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM zoom was a significant update (Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II announcement) to what was already an excellent lens and killerbee gives it a lot of praise in his well-written, detailed review. No matter what brand of camera you use, I think a pro 70-200mm lens [...]

The 60 millionth Canon EOS lens, an EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS zoom, rolled off the production line recently. Canon sent out a celebratory press release today and they also announced three new super-telephoto lenses, a 500mm f/4, 600mm f/4 and a very interesting 200-400mm zoom with a built-in tele-converter that increases the maximum focal length to 560mm. The EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER l.4x [...]
