Fujifilm's original twin-lens-toting, 3D-shooting compact, the Real 3D W1, was ahead of its time. When it was announced, almost no one had the means to actually, well, look at the nifty 3D images. Now, like it or not, 3D is the hottest thing happening in consumer electronics. And with an increasing amount of 3D TVs hitting homes, Fujifilm has stepped their game up.
At the core of this new [...]

Unlike Nikon's other announcement, the S5100 doesn't have a single feature that stands out, unless you count its planned $179 price tag. With a 12.2-megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom and a 2.7-inch LCD, the S5100 has everything you'd expect from a value-oriented compact. You also get 4-way VR image stablization and 18 familiar scene modes.
You also get 720p video capture at 30 [...]

Wander over to the product page for the Pentax K-x and you'll notice that they're now offering up their entry-level DSLR in Chocolate, Beige, Olive and Pink. The understated (well, except for Pink) new shades join an already robust catalog of colors. Each body is available as part of a kit with a DA L 18-55mm zoom lens for $649.
While body color should certainly be the last consideration [...]

Don't worry Sony and Canon users, you'll be getting your chance soon enough. But, for right now, it's only the Nikon folks that can take advantage of Tamron's latest 70-300mm DI VC USD ($449). As its alphabet- soup-style name would suggest, this super-tele-zoom comes packing quite a few of Tamron's performance-oriented features, including their Vibration Compensation system [...]

Samsung really seems to have sympathy for people who hate cords. Last week they expanded their line of Wi-Fi-equipped cameras with the ST80 and now they have debuted the PL90 with its built-in USB connector. The featureset is fairly consistent with what you could expect from a $150 camera. A 12.2-megapixel sensor is complimented by a 2.7-inch (230k pixel) screen and 4x optical zoom. It also records [...]

Just days after pulling back the curtain on two new DualView models, Samsung has announced the ST80 connected compact. The imaging specs are all very familiar, including 3x optical zoom, a 14.2-megapixel sensor, a 3-inch touch screen and the seemingly omnipresnt ability to capture 720p HD video. Its defining feature is its ability to connect to the web using its built-in Wi-Fi, which can be used [...]

While the war over the long-term viability of 3D technology rages on in electronics stores and website comment sections, Panasonic seems to be determined to lead the charge of three-dimensional entertainment. Part of that strategy, which we will see by the end of 2010, includes a 3D lens designed for use with the Lumix G series. The announcement comes as a companion piece for the unveiling of their [...]

Just the other day on our Twitter, we were doing a bit of complaining that there haven't been many new camera announcements lately. That sure has changed in the past few days, though. The latest batch of new compacts comes in the form of a quartet from Fujifilm. Here's a rundown of the new line-up.
FinePix S2800HD $259.95 (September)
Powered by 14-megapixel, 1/2.3" CCD sensor and [...]

Samsung went out on a limb when they stuck front-facing LCD displays on their TL220 and TL225 compact cameras. But, apparently that gamble has paid off because today the DualView line is getting two new additions at the top of the heap. Both the ST600 and ST100 have a 1.8-inch LCD (compared to a 1.5-inch screen on the older models), which can be activated via hardware switch or simply by tapping [...]

The latest last iteration of Panasonic's Lumix LX line, the LX3, garnered plenty of positive responses from shooters looking for a compact that can turn out high-quality images. Now, they're hoping its replacement will get the same warm reception.
On paper, the two cameras actually look fairly similar. Like the LX3, the LX5 sports a Leica DC Vario-Summicron lens with a maximum aperture [...]

It's not the flagship in Panasonic's tough line of TS cameras—that honor still belongs to the TS1—but the scrappy TS10 fills a growing need for affordable cameras that can take a beating and even a bath. The TS10 will come with a price tag of $250 when it hits shelves and beaches in mid-September, but it will also bring with it quite a few features good enough to give its older brother [...]

Personally, I'm not crazy about the term "hybrid camera," but Panasonic has applied it to their new 24x superzoom, mainly because it has the ability to capture 1080i HD video and its new MOS sensor. Its 24x lens (25-600mm 35mm equivalent) doesn't hurt, either.
Aside from its video-capture capabilities, the FZ100 does have some features worth bragging about. It can capture full-resolution, [...]

The FX series cameras have always tried to walk the line between high-performance and pocket-friendly. The FX700 is no exception, cramming an impressive array of features into a rather slim (it doesn't quite warrant the "ultra-slim" label). Like the FX75 before it, the FX700 boasts a 14.1-megapixel sensor and a spacious 3-inch LCD screen that handles most camera functions, including [...]

Living in the northern hemisphere of this planet, we look forward to June 21. Not only is it the start of summer, but it's also the longest day of the year, which makes it the perfect time to start a Solargraphy project. For the unfamiliar, Solargraphy is the ractice of using a pinhole camera to track the sun as it moves across the sky. Exposures are made through miniscule apertures, with the light [...]

It's a question we hear all of the time: How do I get photos taken with my pop-up flash to look better? Diffusion is usually a good option for cutting down on unflattering shadows, which is why Gary Fong created his Puffer pop-up flash diffuser. The diffuser itself is supported by a bracket mounted to the camera's hot shoe. The older model worked with a wide variety of DSLRs, but the new release [...]

Using a micro four thirds sensor to capture video isn't an entirely new idea, but basing a professional movie camera around the format surely is. Panasonic's new AVCCAM, which is scheduled to launch by the end of this year, is compatible with the growing selection of micro four thirds lenses and has all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a high-end movie camera. It shoots full 1080 and [...]

Before you go getting your hopes up, this product is nothing more than a concept at the moment, but it does lay the groundwork for a rather clever product that we wouldn't be surprised to see in the real world some day. The design is actually very simple, implanting a flexible solar panel into the widest part of the strap. The juice collected by the panel is then filtered into the camera using [...]

Sigma's SD15 DSLR has existed, in theory, since way back in 2008, but has remained something of a mystery since then. But, apparently today is the big day and the SD15 body is hitting the streets here in the USA for a touch under $1,000. Inside, you'll find the Sigma's excellent 14.45-megapixel Foveon X3 sensor, similar to the one you'll find in the more-expensive SD14. Also worth noting is the [...]

People really seemed determined to push the iPhone's camera to its absolute limits, and it's making for some very interesting projects. The latest comes in form of a creative device that, in theory, lets you mount Canon EF DSLR lenses to your Apple smartphone.
In order to achieve this DIY camera Frankenstein, DIY-er Jeremy Salvador started with a pre-built iPhone camera housing called [...]

We first heard about Sigma's versatile new 17-50mm F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM zoom lens back at PMA, but now we finally have a price and date to go with the specs. According to the press release, the Canon-mount version of the lens is available right now for $980, with Nikon, Sigma, Sony and Pentax versions to arrive, "in the coming weeks."
It does seem a little odd that the Canon version [...]

Question:
Do UV or circular polrizing filters cause zoomed images to be blurred? I have done some unscientific testing using my Pentax K10D with Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II APO EX DG Macro lens and UV or circular polarizing filters. pictuers taken at maximum zoom are blurry if I use either of the filters, but they're significantly clearer with the bare lens. Is this result normal?
Answer:
What [...]

Look at most of the products Sony has released this year, not just cameras, and you'll notice that they have built 3D technology into just about every device possible. Their new compacts, the WX5 and the TX9 are no exception, with the press material touting them as "the world's smallest 3D cameras." Rather than opting for a two-lens system like Fujifilm, Sony is using the same 3D Sweep Panorama [...]

We tend to nerd out about every last aspect of camera performance around here. After all, it is our job. But, Photographer Lee Morris was sick of readers on his site, Fstoppers.com, complaining that their lack of a high-end camera was preventing them from capturing great images. In order to quiet the complaining, he set out to make pro-quality images using the "worst camera" he could find. [...]
