You may have noticed that this blog hasn't been getting very much love lately, but it's not because we have fallen out of love with photography (that's for sure!) We're phasing out our Typepad usage in order to move all of our new content into Popphoto.com proper. You'll probably still see some links to this blog here and there, but for now, you should check out the Popphoto.com [...]

Almost a year ago today, we made a post about a company that was selling wacky inflatable photobooths that were designed by two professional photographers for use at weddings, parties, ect—what could possibly top that? How about an inflatable photo studio. That’s right, an entire studio made of high-grade plastic that inflates to size in 2-3 minutes.
Brian Hedenberg, a commercial fashion photographer [...]

If there's currently a Samsung NX10 residing in your camera bag, you might want to bust it out and bestow upon it the new firmware that Samsung has just released. The big draw for firmware version 1.20 is that the NX10 will now be compatible with Samsung's i-Function system, which lets you control crucial camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance, etc) right from [...]

This is just too cool—Benjamin Lotan, an entrepreneurial Facebooker and a graduate student, started a Web site called PrintingFacebook.com. For $20, Benjamin will print a 20”x40” high-resolution image on quality photo paper featuring every single one of your Facebook friends’ profile pictures.
The size of each friend’s picture depends on the number of friends you have, but Benjamin’s [...]

Top:The final product, a green-leather-wrapped, homemade screw-mount reflex camera. Bottom: Denis MO in his workshop fine-tuning the "DM flex."
For past 25 years, the French speaking Denis MO toyed with the idea of building his very own 24x36mm reflex camera, completely from scratch, using nothing but his home workshop. Finally at the age of 42, he felt like he had the technical skills [...]

When we first stumbled across this undeniably-photo-nerdy watch we were torn—yes, it screams out “I’m a photo dork,” but deep down, we really really wanted one (and still do).
The fine folks over at The Unemployed Philosopher’s Guild are offering this witty timepiece for the reasonable price of $35.95. With a max aperture of f/2, $36 is a real steal.
We must warn you though, while there [...]

The Daily Mail/Mark Pain
During this past weekend’s Ryder Cup, Daily Mail photographer Mark Pain was really feeling it, as he and his camera were struck by a stray ball hit by the one and only, Tiger Woods. Unlike Tiger, Pain’s shot was dead on.
Tiger and his partner Steve Stricker ultimately came up victorious, defeating their European opponents, despite this little mishap (and some very poor [...]

Use DropMocks.com and create a simple online gallery by dragging and dropping images from your desktop.

This relatively new exposure setting is found on the main command dial of some Canon EOS DSLR’s.
What it is: Creative auto (CA) is literally and figuratively between the full auto (a.k.a. the “Green Zone”) and program exposure modes. It gives inexperienced shooters control over simplified camera settings that are typically not adjustable in the auto mode and confusing in program.
Who it’s [...]

FROM OUR EDITORS AT PHOTOKINA: Leica’s all-new V-Lux 2 is to the Panasonic FZ100 what the Leica D-Lux 5 is to the Panasonic LX5—essentially the same camera (other than that infamous red Leica badge). So when Leica announced its brand new V-Lux 2, its specs came as no surprise. This is not to say that they are not very impressive.
The V-Lux 2 features a 14MP CMOS sensor, 3” LCD screen, an [...]

FROM OUR EDITORS AT PHOTOKINA: Leica announced its all-new D-Lux 5—the expected update to their flagship compact line. Other than the iconic red badge, the D-Lux 5 is essentially the same camera on the inside as the Panasonic LX5, so it’s no surprise that their specs are nearly identical. Although this shouldn't be held against the D-Lux 5 seeing as we are quite impressed with the LX5.

A mock-up of the new Olympus compact.
FROM OUR EDITORS AT PHOTOKINA: Olympus confirmed that it will be launching a new flagship compact camera that incorporates a Zuiko lens, although no name has been given yet for this new camera. FROM OUR EDITORS AT PHOTOKINA: To accompany the launch of their new flagship camera, the K-5, Pentax also announced the launch of their new 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 wide-to-telezoom lens (27.5-207mm 35mm equivalent). The digital revolution has breathed new life into the neutral-density (ND) filter. Smaller-than-full-frame sensors give you extra depth of field—fine when you want it, but not when you want to throw the background out of focus with a large aperture. On a bright day, you may not be able to do it at all. Enter Hoya’s new PRO1 Digital ND16 filter, which, at 4 stops of light loss, is the densest in [...]

By now, you're probably familiar with the rather awesome video capabilities of Canon's EOS 7D DSLR. However, with some help from an Adobe After Effects plug-in called Twixtor, some video makers have taken things up a notch. The super slo-mo BMX action above was shot entirely with a 7D at 720p/60 fps. Then Twixtor was used to stretch out the footage to give it the appearance of ridiculously [...]

Adding to its long list of newly released products, Nikon introduced a replacement to its mid-level flash unit, the appropriately-follow up to the SB-600, the SB-700. While it's built on a base established by the more affordable SB-600, it also borrows some pro-level features from the SB-900.
The SB-700 incorporates a wide zoom range that covers the majority of Nikkor lens focal lengths — [...]
